Draw this again tri-dragons by Mystalia Draw this again tri-dragons by Mystalia
I thought it would be nice to participate in a contest for a change. So I made an entry for the draw this again contest. I love the draw this again meme, so I had fun with this! It's a traditional work with digital colors.

Here's the link to the original old drawing: [link]
And here's a link to the new drawing: [link]

I'm so excited about this. I never really realized I had improved that much. If I may, I might even be a little proud. I hope you guys like it too!

media used: mechanical pencil, indian ink and dip pen, 0,25 copic multiliner, GIMP for the colors.

Maybe I will soon :) Right now I have to meet a few urgent deadlines at university, but perhaps after that I'll try this again!

haha, yeah, I guess it kind of looks like that. I didn't try to make them creepy on purpose, but I guess they look scarier because they're no longer smiling. =)

Wow -- a huge change. I like the change in style from cartoony to more mature. Probably changed styles with you, after you experienced new things in life between the two drawings. I always find that interesting, to see how the artist's style changes over time. :D

The dragons in the old picture were from a comic I made back then. I couldn't get complex characters to look the same on every page, so I made their designs simpler and easy to remember. =) I'm glad I stopped doing that, though, because experimenting with detailed creature designs is so much fun. And it made me improve too :la:

Thanks for stopping by! ^^ Glad you like it!

Thanks! The old picture is from november 2008, so it's almost 4 years old. I think I did well in those four years ^^

Haha, it looks kind of like Vritra, doesn't it? I honestly hadn't noticed until now. They share the beard-like hair and pose. It wasn't intentional, but I guess it's true X) I just tried to imitate the old picture as well as possible and the dragon there had a beard and its mouth open.

Hey, no complaints from me. I like that's it's kind of a recurring trademark of yours. The look of the dragon (and his other two awesome friends) is all your own. And I definitely love your dragon beards too. But the best part of all is your amazing command over image depth and perspective. It feels so much like they're gonna pop right out of the screen to bite my head off, lol. Here's hoping you win the contest. =D

amazing!! may i ask how you improved? did you draw this work over and over again? or did you practice other dragon drawings and just improved? i'm very curious so i can learn from you!!

Well no, I didn't draw this single picture over and over again. That wouldn't be very helpful, because you'd only be copying what you had already drawn, along with all the mistakes in the picture. By doing this you wouldn't teach yourself anything new. It is very important to keep drawing though.
If you come across a problem you can't solve on your own, try studying other artists and see how they solve the problem you're having. Or google real animals and see how they work. That often helps. Don't be afraid to reference photo's, they're immensely helpful. Don't blatantly copy the photo, but try to understand how the things and creatures that are on the photo work. For example, if you're trying to draw a rabbit, find a picture of one, but draw it in a different pose and environment. Practice this lots and lots of times and you'll get better for sure.

I'm not saying I'm a master of all this at all, because I'm not X) I need lots more practice before I can contently call myself an artist. But everybody can improve with a little effort  Good luck!

The new one is really awesome, much more detailed and the perspective improved a ton. In the newer one it almost seems like the dragon at the bottom is going to leap of the page! I actually like the before drawing a lot too, its kind of cuter and more cartoony so its nice in that way. To me both are good in their own ways style wise but the newer version is definitely better because it shows more precision and technical skill.

Thank you! ^^ It is good to hear the new one looks better. Otherwise four years of practice would have gone to waste X) And the old one looks cartoony because they were in a comic I made back then. I wasn't capable of redrawing complex characters on every single page, so I made them easy to remember. =) But I'm glad I canceled it. It gave me the opportunity to create detailed creatures again.

Thank you so much for that profound comment! It's nice to know people take the time to look at and appreciate my work. I'd share my cookies with you if I could =)

Thank you so much =) I'm really happy with how this turned out. It was a great piece to redraw. And it would be absolutely fantastic if I'd win, but let's not set the bar too high X) That would probably lead to disappointment. For now, I'm just glad I could update something from my gallery. It was fun

mine looks rubbish but I've no idea how to sort it out so it'll have to stay rubbish. I should have just traced the original and re-coloured it. Not that I could enter that, oh well.

I've already seen lots of entries that were just recolors of the original, because the artist thought he improved his coloring. I'm not sure if it is valid, but it might be. And I'm sure it's not as rubbish as you make it out to be X) As long as you try hard, every little inch of improvement counts!

Thank you so much! I love seeing all the entries to this contest. It's such a great idea for a contest. I used to love the older drawing to bits four years ago, so it wasn't hard for me to choose which deviation to redraw =)

Thank you for stopping by, glad you like it!
