Guarded by thorns by Mystalia Guarded by thorns by Mystalia
I'm grumpy about the fact that the big moon is not round in the slightest. >.<

So I finally finished this thing. :iconhellsdragonwolf: asked me to do it for my 10.000 kiriban. She gave me this sketch [link] and wanted to see what I would do with such a design. So here it is.

Drew it absentmindedly at school a few weeks back in black ballpoint. Then filled in the dragon with black ink, which looked pretty cool, so I did the background in black ink as well. Added some red ink at the very end, so the picture would pop out of the screen a little.

But halfway through, something terrible happened. I was inking happily, then went to bed and let it dry, only to discover that one of the pieces of tape hadn't managed to stick, so the paper was a bit wrinkled. Not all that much, but it still bothers me.

There were a few digital tough-ups in Gimp. I added a darker gradient to the sky. Also, originally the dragon and the thorn bushes weren't illuminated by the red light, but I thought about it and decided it would look better if they were, so I added that digitally too.

So here you are. I hope you like it ^^ It's the first decent background I've done in a while. Certainly with traditional media.

Hee...I love how you can't tell if the dragon is just a little behind the sun or if its blowing a giant gum bubble :giggle:. The coloring of this piece is really cool as well! It has a very interesting dreamlike quality.

Haha X) That made me laugh so hard, the gum bubble thing. You're right, he could be doing that. That would be one hell of a bubble then.

Thanks! I was debating whether to go with green or red, but green made everything look so alien. So I went with red for the somewhat eerie atmosphere.

DRAGONS DO EVERYTHING TO THE X-TREME. INCLUDING BLOWING BUBBLES. :giggle:

You're welcome! Eerie atmospheres are fun to do .

Very beautiful. I haven't seen much art in ink lately, and it really is a cool effect.

Thank you, thank you ^^ I love working with ink, especially when trying to create eerie scenes like this one. This was a very quick drying ink, so I had to work really fast to make it look equal in color. X)

Thanks! ^^ I love brush and ink. I think they're my favorite media. Next to watercolors maybe.

Thank you very much ^^ Yes, I love working with traditional media and actually having the result of hard work to hold in my hands.

Sadly, this guy won't be able to fly with those wings. But he'll manage on the ground, I'm sure ^^

Thanks for stopping by!

Wow thank you very much, it looks wonderful! :)
But at first - i am a girl x) so please just change the he in the description to she^^ thanks :3
Soooo now to the picture:
I love that it's traditionally and i adore your skill in traditional media :')
I think the simplicity of the colors puts the look more on the shadows which is nifty and gives the picture depth : )
The different shades of grey and the contrast to the red ink make it look kind of dark and mysterious, i like that^^
Oh and i really don't mind the changes - that's what i wanted you to be, creative with the sketch ^^ (neither i mind the not-roundness of the moon or wrinkled paper c; )
And, because of the fact that it's traditional media, i'd love to know which size the paper has c:

By the way, i think i will do the picture too just like you suggested^^ will take some time though, still so much to do :/

Oh, I'm so sorry! O-o I didn't know, my apologies. I'll go change it right away. I'm such an airhead, it says so right there on your userpage X)

I'm really glad that you like it! I'm always a bit unsure when drawing for others, because I don't really know what they expect to see in the end. I'm always relieved when it turns out alright ^^

Originally, I wasn't going to add a second color, but the red made the dragon and the mountain he's sitting on pop, so I did it anyway. And shading things with ink is one of my favorite things to do! :la:

The paper? Hmm, let me go measure it. It's 50 by 32 centimeters, but I cropped it a bit so the tape could stick to the sides. The picture itself is 44 by 25 centimeters.

I'll be looking forward to your version! ^^

Oh it's no problem :)

I kind of "gave up" making expectations to the pictures other people draw for me,
'cause you just can't imagine the result, so I just let myself be surprised :D

Thanks for the info^^ and it's bigger than i thought :o

I like this...but I wish I could love it. In a lot of ways it reminds me of the world in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with it's ashen colors and blood red moon in the sky. But it's precisely those colors the tones down the potential of this piece for me. :hmm:

Hmm, I don't know The Elder scrolls very well. It's a game, right? If it looks like it, that wasn't intentional. Originally I wasn't going to add the red and have it stay greyscale, but then the dragon wouldn't pop out as much :hmm: And I don't have a lot of colored ink around here X) I could choose from bright green, purple and red. I was hesitating over green, but then it would look so alien, which wasn't the intention either.

I'm sorry I couldn't live up to your expectations with this one =( Maybe next time =) I'm probably not going to pick up brush and ink in a while, so it won't be ashen again ^^

Please don't feel like I'm being too judgmental or anything. I'm really not. I do enjoy and admire all your work (because I know I'll never be as good), but it was just comparing this piece to the high bar you set for yourself in your previous work, that's all.

Oh no, no, you're not too judgmental ^^ I appreciate every opinion of my work, because not every single piece can be better than the last one. I'm glad there are people like you who tell me these kinds of things, because I can learn from it and try to keep the bar high, as you've said.

So thank you for sharing your opinion =)
