The regal butterfly by Mystalia The regal butterfly by Mystalia
This here is a sorry excuse for an apology for being so inactive for a long time. University caught up with me and I have been spending a lot of time doing things other than drawing in the past couple of months. Mostly writing, be it essays or stories, and traveling across our small country to do various types of research on specific paintings for class. This is actually the first finished thing I've managed to crank out in a long time.

I have been sketching, of course. I have a little paperblanks sketchbook (Good lord, I love paperblanks <3) that I take with me on the train to class, which is a thirty-minute trip, give or take a few seconds. The sketches in it are usually small and loose and more often than not about either comic ideas or concepts for the story I am writing, so I'd rather not upload those. Maybe I'll filter a few neutral sketches and make a sketch dump out of them, so I can upload something from the past weeks, though.

So yeah, still using this paper texture as a background, mainly to cover up the dark patches the scanner made when scanning the image, which is actually too large for it. The right side of the paper got cut off a bit. I plan on making a new batch of original "old paper" sometime soon, though. I'll try to start using those when I finish them.

About this dragon here. I was flipping through the pages of a "guide to butterflies" that i found on the back of a shelf, when I saw a wing pattern that I liked. I drew this dragon to try out that pattern as well as the new watercolors I got for myself. The colors I chose are beautiful on paper (I adore orange and brown hues), but I changed the pattern on the wings quite a bit from the original to make it fit.

Media used: black ballpoint pen, watercolors

So wonderful to have you back! I love the colors and the perspective on this one which seem to be a bit of a departure from your pre-hiatus work, but a good departure. Very inspired, yet so original in more than a few ways. :)

It's good to be back. ^^ It's also good to see not everybody has left because of the infrequent updates. How have you been?

I hadn't drawn a wyvern in quite some time, even though I love them so. So this was a thrill to make, even though I encountered some problems while coloring the wings. But they turned out alright, didn't they? =) I'm glad you like it too! I hope I can upload some more things in the near future.

Thank you ^^

I did have a little trouble coloring the wings, though. Originally, I wanted to let the orange fade to red, but I already shaded it with black pen. So when I painted over that, the result was a bit of a purple-ish color in the corners of the wings X) So I reluctantly had to leave out more red.

But I can't say I'm disappointed by the outcome. I really like this picture.

I'm also very sorry about not finishing the colors of that line art I said I'd do. Things have been so busy the last months. I have worked on it and it's stored on my computer, but I still haven't put those finishing touches on it. I feel kind of bad for working on it for such a long time.

Wow, I think this may be the first time I've looked at something on dA and had the word "majestic" pop into my head immediately. But that's what I think of when I see this. c:

I love the pose and the movement of the fabric; this is just lovely!

Such kind words ^^ Thank you so much! "Majestic" is not really a term I keep in mind while drawing dragons, but it certainly is a nice one to hear when it describes the result.

I just adore wyverns. I really had fun making this one, perhaps also because it's the first finished work I've made in quite a while.

And you're still keeping up the good work with your monsters, I see. I've always loved your innovative monster designs. Always nice to hear from you again. =)

Well, it's been a wile since i've drawn a wyvern, and i've never done a dragon with wings that take up that much of it's body at all. SO....i want to draw a really good wyvern myself, very elaborate, but very different from all the others i've seen. When i'm done with some of the pics i'm working on now, i will draw somthing more complex than i usually do, but my focus will been on originality.

I love wyverns so much. And dragons are big things, they need massive wings to hold them up in the air! Even though it's quite hard to get those wings on a single sheet of paper X) This sheet was a tiny bit larger than an A4 sheet, so while the wings weren't that much of a problem, the other details had to be drawn relatively small.

I'd love to see your wyvern when you're done with it!

Coolios. Though i still love stylizing, i've been practicing anatomy a lot. I know just one wing needs to be the entire length of the body from nose to tail, so it can be hard to get the whole body on a small piece of paper and they also need a big chest too. However i've gotten a lot better at not making the head to big to start with.*she remembers her teen years when her dragons were all squished up on the paper*:XD:

Oh man, yeah, all my old drawings from years ago are terrible X) It's so much fun to browse through them again, but they're so embarrassing at the same time. I just started with the head and drew from there, nothing ever fit. Good times.

I eventually learned it was fine if the whole dragon couldn't be seen on the paper.^^;

This is beautiful, and the name has an truthfulness to it that I really love. I think this is actually a great apology! (Haha) I love all the rings and fabric on the creature. Amazing!

What kind words ^^ Thank you so much. I hope I can put in enough effort in drawing so I won't have to apologize in such ways again X)

I rarely draw clothing or jewelry on creatures, but it made this picture so much more dynamic. I went against my principles here, but it worked for this picture, it seems!

Thank you for stopping by!
