Bladed Wings (fin) by Mystalia Bladed Wings (fin) by Mystalia
Colored version of the upload from the day before yesterday. I didn't originally mean to color this one, so the inking isn't done with that in mind. But I was curious what it would look like if I painted it, so I worked on it with some watercolors. I removed the earlier black and white version from most DA groups I submitted it to, so I hope they'll accept this version as the latest one, haha.

I always love the muted colours that your paintings have! The texture of the paper, is that something that is on the actual paper (I see its not there in the black and white version) or is it something that you added in afterwards?

It's a little bit of both. It's very rough watercolor paper, so the "dents" and texture in it are from the actual paper, but the color is not. The colors of the dragon (the reds, greens and blues) are traditional, but I added the yellowish old paper color in digitally so it would be easier on the eye.

I agree with that. Just wish I had more skill with paints, especially watercolour. I've mostly used acrylics.

You seem to be quite good at painting animals already. I'd say if you can draw a bat and a lizard, mash them together and you'll have a dragon, haha. The fun thing about dragons, is that you can put them in dynamic poses without it looking off quickly, because it's a snake-y fantasy creature. The uncanny valley effect won't happen as frequently as when drawing humans or animals that exist in real life.

I really enjoyed the black and white version but I must say that this really turned out beautiful. I love the red tint.

I'm always very attached to the black and white versions as well. Inking is what I love to do the most, so it's always scary to put down the first paint and "mess up" the black ink, haha. But I'm really glad with how this one turned out, and you guys seem to like it as well, so it's alright.

*Eyes explode* t-teach me!? wow this is gorgeous!!! This masterpiece is art goals XD amazing job! ;o;
I love the colors you picked and I love how subtle it is in some areas. I've attempted to do subtle watercolors but it just looks like washed out pastel (Sevel And Cloud Boy sitting in the sky). XD

Thank you for your kind words!

The thing about watercolors is that the are very transparent paints. You need several layers of them to have much of an impact, but that also means you can play around with the different layers to make your picture more interesting (and you need some courage to paint over colors you have already painted, time and time again).

If I look at the picture you linked, there are a few things that are different from the picture I painted here that I could name for you if you'd like some tips?

oh :0 interesting yeah I haven't tried layering yet. Yes i'd love some tips if you wouldn't mind! I've been really trying to improve in my watercolors lately. It's a difficult medium but OH so beautiful when you get it right <3
